SDLP LGBT+ Supports Memorial for Mark Ashton in his home of Portrush.
Mark Ashton was a passionate advocate for the rights of workers and LGBTQIA+ people.
Mark grew up in Portrush and studied in the Northern Ireland Hotel and Catering College, now part of Ulster University.
He left Northern Ireland at 18 and moved to London for a better life.
In 1984 he co-founded, along with Mike Jackson and others, Le****ns and G**s Support the Miners.
A passionate communist, he later became General Secretary of the Young Communist League.
Mark died in 1987 as a result of complications related to HIV/AIDS.
He deserves a memorial in his home town of Portrush
