NMC consultation: Practice Learning Review
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has opened a UK wide public consultation on proposed changes to nursing and midwifery education standards, with a strong focus on the quality of practice learning experiences.
The proposals have been informed by extensive engagement with students, professionals, educators and practice learning partners, and include consideration of:
• How practice learning can better support readiness for professional practice
• Proposed changes to programme hours
• Strengthening inclusion, anti racism and community based learning
NIPEC encourages nurses, midwives, students, educators, practice learning partners and stakeholders across Northern Ireland to take the opportunity to contribute their views.
📅 Consultation closes: 23 July 2026

Today, NIPEC celebrates and thanks midwives across Northern Ireland for their expertise, professionalism and commitment to women, babies and families. Midwives play a vital role across maternity services, supporting safe, compassionate and high quality care at every stage of the childbearing journey. Their contribution to leadership, education, research and service improvement continues to strengthen outcomes for families and communities. On International Day of the Midwife, we recognise the dedication, skill and impact of the midwifery workforce and thank them for the invaluable work they do every day.
