Happy New Year! Hope 2025 is happy, healthy and successful.

Before Christmas becomes a distant memory I want you to think back over what frustrated you. Did a parcel turn up late? Is a returns policy nuts? Did something not meet expectations?

Why did it go wrong? To be clear, this is not about you being more organised but about the other party. Broken promises? Bad product descriptions? Understaffed during peak times? Poor processes?

Now reflect on how that could translate into your business. Where could your customers feel similar pains? And what do you need to do to fix it?

And remember… you should be thinking a customer is for life - not just for Christmas!

Let’s look at in more detail…

If you remember, last time, I said I see these as coming from clients and ex clients.

So, how do you get recommendations?

Largely, it’s about delivering a great job:

✅ Doing what you say you are going to do
✅ Checking in with your customer regularly – especially if they are now being looked after by your team
✅ Communicating regularly
✅ Putting your hand up if something goes wrong – and then fixing it
✅ Keeping projects on track – making sure you meet the timescales you promised, and saying if there’s going to be a problem

However, customers usually recommend if they have been “wowed”.

What does that even mean?

📈 Taking the pain away that they remember the last time they did something similar
📈 Blowing them away with a great experience
📈 Giving them way more value than they were expecting – but don’t fall into the trap of seriously underselling yourself
📈 Causing them to tell people how super impressed they were – they don’t even necessarily see it as a recommendation, but more just wanting to share a great experience

And, of course, you can tell them you enjoyed working with them and are looking for more customers just like them. No harm in a little ego stroking.
