Alloa Round Table Cultural Appreciation Evening: Argentina 🇦🇷

In celebration of Clackmannanshire’s long and undeniably rich historical ties with Argentina, the Alloa Round Table is proud to present this evening’s special appreciation post.

While some may claim the connection is slight, we at Alloa RT know better. From the pampas to the banks of the River Devon, our links run deep — not least because in Clackmannanshire’s premier shopping outlet, Sterling Mills, the adidas shop proudly displays an Argentina shirt in the window. Proof, if any were needed.

Our members’ personal connections are equally strong:

• Rob – Once ate a steak in an Argentinian restaurant in Glasgow. The waitress said it was “very authentic.”

• Nick – Has a mate whose cousin backpacked through Buenos Aires in 2008 and brought back a keyring.

• Kris – Owns a pair of leather shoes that might have come from Argentina. Or Italy. Hard to tell.

• Brandon – Scored a last-minute winner in a five-a-side match while “Sweet Caroline” was mistakenly playing. Close enough to Maradona’s Hand of God.

• Guiseppe – His gran once swapped a recipe for pasta for one for empanadas. International culinary diplomacy at its finest

• Adam – Has watched two Lionel Messi compilations on YouTube. That’s basically dual nationality.

• John – Has never been to Argentina, but has strong opinions about steak.

• Steven – Once successfully parallel parked a Fiat Punto. Tango-level skill and passion.

• Ryan – Has a bottle of Malbec in the cupboard that he’s been “saving for a special occasion” since 2019.

• Alistair – His dog once chased a squirrel in a manner reminiscent of an Argentinian gaucho herding cattle.

• Boby – Expertly grilled sausages on a disposable barbecue last summer. Essentially an asado master.

So raise a glass (preferably of Malbec) to Argentina – land of tango, footballing genius, and suspiciously strong Clackmannanshire connections.

🇳🇴 A Message from Alloa Round Table 🇳🇴

Few people know this, but Clackmannanshire and Norway have enjoyed a close relationship for centuries.

Admittedly, historians haven’t found any evidence of it… but we’re confident they just haven’t looked hard enough.

After all, both places have:

* More hills than anyone asked for.
* More rain than seems strictly necessary.
* People who think 14°C counts as “taps aff” weather.
* An unhealthy number of people who own waterproofs that cost more than their first car.
* Stunning scenery that locals stop noticing because they’re too busy complaining about the weather.

Following further painstaking research, we’ve also uncovered these remarkable Norwegian connections within Alloa Round Table…

🇳🇴 Nick supports the Minnesota Vikings, making him practically Scandinavian by association.

🚢 Rob once worked for a cruise line, so he’s got a proven appreciation for very large boats. Close enough to longships.

🗺️ Adam once successfully located Oslo on a map without using Google Maps.

✈️ Brandon has, at some point, seriously considered a holiday to the Norwegian fjords before deciding Scotland already had enough spectacular scenery and unpredictable weather.

🥾 Ryan owns a waterproof jacket, making him suitably equipped for life in either Clackmannanshire or Norway.

☕ John has almost certainly eaten smoked salmon, giving him a direct cultural connection.

🏔️ Kris enjoys a good hill walk, and Norway has thoughtfully provided several thousand suitable hills.

🌧️ Alistair has spent years acclimatising to Norwegian conditions simply by living in Clackmannanshire.

⚓ Steven once admired a boat. It wasn’t a Viking longship, but every saga has to start somewhere.

🍕 Giuseppe has probably said “Skål!” after hearing it on TV, and nobody corrected him.

And, as a group, we’ve all looked at a picture of a Norwegian fjord and thought:

“Aye… reminds me a bit of Menstrie if you squint hard enough.”

Skål from everyone at Alloa Round Table! 🇳🇴🍻
