A recent study conducted by ITDP in collaboration with UC Davis and the FIA Foundation titled “Compact Cities Electrified: The Benefits of Small Vehicles” outlines a compelling roadmap for rethinking transport systems in a way that simultaneously reduces both costs and emissions.

The report emphasizes the impact of three key levers: downsizing vehicles, accelerating the transition to electric mobility, and prioritizing public transit alongside walking and cycling. When implemented together, these approaches can deliver substantial outcomes:

Up to a 70% decrease in transport-related energy demand

An 85% reduction in reliance on liquid fuels

A significant drop around half in consumer transportation expenses

Emissions cut by more than two-thirds

A measurable decline in road fatalities, estimated at around 10%

Notably, simply limiting vehicle size can already generate meaningful benefits, including roughly 20% savings for consumers, enhanced safety, and lower energy consumption.

In a context marked by increasing energy prices, this report points toward a clear and actionable direction: mobility systems that are cleaner, more cost-efficient, and designed around people rather than vehicles.
