Picture it: obscure, semi-oppressed outer-suburban high school, Australia, mid 1980s; it’s Bastille Day, and mainly as a mid-winter morale-booster, the nerds in French class each receive an éclair to mark this important day in French history.
If someone at that time had told young Graham that exactly 40 years later I’d still be celebrating avec éclair, only this time at the local patisserie down the block from my own Paris apartment - well, that would have been a notion completely and utterly beyond even remotely conceivable.
So. Here’s to French National Day, a day that celebrates liberté, égalité, fraternité. I am additionally raising my éclair in honor of this personal moment - a testament to what’s possible. Which I now know is practically anything.
