Bastille Day 🇫🇷

One of my favorite Bastille Day (la Fête nationale) traditions is watching France’s impressive military parade. This year, 130 planes and helicopters will fill the skies over Paris on July 14th (le 14 juillet) 🇫🇷

Will you be celebrating Bastille Day this year?

🦢⚙️ No electricity, no engine, no computer... Yet it has been moving for more than 250 years.

The Silver Swan was created in 1773 by English jeweller and entrepreneur James Cox. Its mechanical design was developed by the Belgian inventor John Joseph Merlin. Today, it is known as one of the most impressive automata in history.

The swan is life-sized and works only with springs, gears, and clockwork mechanisms. When it starts moving, it turns its head, cleans its feathers, looks around, and then notices a fish in front of it. It slowly bends down to catch the fish while glass rods create the effect of moving water.

The machine contains around 2,000 moving parts, and the neck alone has 113 mechanical pieces. For the 18th century, this was an incredible engineering achievement.

The Silver Swan was displayed at the Paris World Fair in 1867 and amazed visitors from around the world. Even the famous writer Mark Twain admired it.

Today, the Silver Swan is displayed at the Bowes Museum in England, where it still performs several times a day and continues to impress visitors with its beautiful movement and remarkable design. ✨

🏰💧 What made a castle truly strong: high walls or something hidden?

During the Middle Ages, castle sieges could last for months. Water was one of the most important needs. When access to rivers and wells outside the castle was cut off, people had to rely on the resources inside the fortress.

This is why the deep well of Nuremberg Castle was so important. Carved directly into solid rock, the well reaches about 50 meters deep and provides access to underground water.

Today, visitors can see its impressive depth when a light is lowered into the well. The disappearing circle of light shows the remarkable engineering skills of the Middle Ages.

Strong walls could keep enemies out, but a reliable water supply was often what kept a castle alive.

👨‍👦❤️ Happy Father’s Day

Today is Father’s Day.

This beautiful song by Stromae tells the story of a child who keeps asking:

“Where are you, Dad?

The song is inspired by Stromae’s own life. He lost his father when he was young and turned his feelings into music.

“Papaoutai” is not only about one father and one son. It speaks for many children who grew up missing a father’s presence.

On this Father’s Day, we remember all fathers who are with us, and all those who live on in our memories. ❤️🕊️

🎵 Papaoutai a song about love, absence, and the lasting bond between a father and a child.
