Out on January 20th on Message In Our Music Vol. 2, here is a few words from Waxist who compiled it:

Network & Co was a band from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They released a very rare, self-produced 45 single with the songs “La La Means I Love You” and “Spirit Of The Boogie”, which we features in this compilation. While “La La Means I Love You” is a great cover of the Delfonics’ classic, “Spirit Of The Boogie” is an amazing original composition, and was written by Renardo Smith. Both songs were released on the band’s own Network Records imprint. I first heard “Spirit Of The Boogie” several years ago on a mix from Detroit’s Peoples Record owner Brad Hales (“In The Modern Room”) & I was instantly blown away by it.

It is only years after that I eventually managed to contact Renardo Smith on the phone and proposed him to reissue his song. Renardo was really surprised initially but after some talking, accepted the idea of making his song available to a new audience. “Spirit Of The Boogie” is truly a wonderful dancefloor song that will probably makes you think of Michael Jackson recording an independent modern soul single. It has the highest potential to elevate a dancefloor crowd to club heaven, and my original copy has proven this on several occasions.

Out on January 20th on Message In Our Music Vol. 2! A few words from Waxist who compiled it:

"Direct Connec Shun was a Houston, Texas based band started by bassist Bernard “Kinny” Mercier and keyboardist Marsha McDonald around 1978. They were joined by David Guillory (Guitar), Harrisson “Dirty Butch” Peters (Drums), Charles Dorsey (Percussions) and Jackie Simely (Vocals). They were the house band at the Flag Ship Hotel in Galveston, Texas. The band was influenced by Earth Wind & Fire, The Commodores or Marvin Gaye. They did a lot of opening concerts for the famous soul / funk acts of the era including The Bar Kays, SOS Band, Chaka Khan or Con Funk Shun. Their song “He’s No Good” was self-produced & self-released as a 12” in the early 80’s on Mr Mercier’s label BKM.

The band recorded the vocal & instrumental versions in an 8 hours session over a two days period. According to Bernard Mercier, only 500 copies were pressed & most of the stock got destroyed in a flood – which made this record really rare & hard to find to this day."
