Ryan Gander – The Mouse That Couldn’t Speak (Pinault Collection, Bourse de Commerce, Paris)

British artist Ryan Gander (b. 1976) is known for his conceptual works that blend wit, play, and philosophical reflection. In this piece, he stages an animatronic mouse with a stutter, nestled in a small hole in the wall, surprising visitors as they wait for the elevator.

Trapped in its animated “loop,” this unlikely mouse — condemned to live cycle after cycle of the same experience to the point of exhaustion — becomes a touching metaphor for human vulnerability, repetition, and resilience. With the innocent voice of a child, it hesitates, stammers, and fails to express itself, inviting us to reflect, smile, and perhaps recognize ourselves in its quiet struggle.

This subtle, poetic installation reminds us that even the smallest gesture can reveal the deepest truths.
The mouse is one fragment of a trilogy, accompanied by two companion pieces permanently installed in the Pinault Collection’s Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice.
