The MD 441-N is a dynamic microphone that comes surprisingly close to condenser performance. Its response curve is smooth and wide, extending from 40 to 20,000 Hz, with a super-cardioid directional pattern as precise as “an Olympic skater doing school figures” as Sennheiser says. A common problem with dynamic super-cardioid is mechanical noise and vibration conducted through the housing; it is solved here by a double housing with compliant suspension, bringing studio ‘quiet’ into the performer’s hand. For added flexibility, it features presence and bass switches (a 5 dB boost at 5 kHz and a five-position attenuation), plus a design that ensures absence of pops and proximity effect thanks to its pressure-gradient system and integral windscreen.
The 441 became a broadcast staple before becoming a stage favorite; artists such as Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), David Bowie, Elton John, Robert Smith (The Cure) and Frank Zappa helped cement its status.
While recording classic album “Rumors” by Fleetwood Mac, producer-engineer Ken Caillat says he chose a MD 441 for Stevie Nicks’ vocal after tests on day one, and also on kick drum.
