Coconut Oil - friend or foe?⁣

Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap recently- once reigning as one of the healthiest ingredients among flaxseeds and avocados, it tumbled from grace and now has some people worrying that all that oil isn’t all that great for you (don’t you hate when that happens?)⁣

We wanted to help dispel some myths about coconut oil, why we include it in our carefully- crafted recipes and why it absolutely can (and should) be a part of your dogs diet!⁣

𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘵 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘵: this one is true! But there’s saturated fat and there’s saturated fat- coconut oil is sold in many forms, the most commonly used in products being odourless, or refined, oil to eliminate the tropical flavour. This refinement process strips away a lot of coconut oil’s essential beneficial properties such as the high levels of medium chain fatty acids which provide much of the nutrition. What remains after refinement is a saturated fat akin to margarine, not to mention the coconuts used are often low quality with chlorine being used to refine the oil- yuck. ⁣

Unrefined, organic, raw coconut oil is high in saturated fat but the good kind that your dog’s body can use to reduce inflammation, build healthy skin barriers and lubricante joints. ⁣

𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘵 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘔𝘺 𝘋𝘰𝘨 𝘍𝘢𝘵: as long as you are using an organic, unrefined coconut oil, your dog can safely consume up to 1 tablespoon per 15kg body weight. * The medium chain fatty acids are efficiently metabolised and will not cause weight gain. Of course, common sense is key here- if you have a couch potato on your hands, then maybe only serve them a little spoonful with their meals. ⁣

Coconut Oil has also been shown to have 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 properties...if your pup is suffering from itchy skin, a wound that won’t heal or eczema, it is worth adding coconut oil to their diet. ⁣

Dogs to not have oily skin so it is imperative that they receive an adequate amount of high quality fats in their diet. ⁣

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜, 𝐑𝐚𝐰, 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐜
