WHAT IS THE EN-13634 PICTOGRAM ? 🥾 read the caption 👇🏻
Did you know that when you buy your riding shoes you should always look for the EN-13634 pictogram? But what is that?
When you ride, you can wear any type of shoe but be aware of the fact that it won’t be enough to protect you. Technical motorcycle shoes and boots are Personal Protective Equipment, unlike casual shoes and boots. As a result, they comply with a European standard, namely EN 13634:2017.
In addition to impact abrasion, impact cut, transverse rigidity, sole detachment, and lining abrasion resistance, certified footwear must pass laboratory tests. During this certification, the shoe is literally disassembled to perform the tests on each component and material.
By the results of the tests, motorcycle shoes will be certified or not, and the level of protection will be indicated. Upon passing the test, the shoes are marked with a pictogram on their tongue. According to their protection capacity, they will be classified as type 1 or type 2 based on the reference standard. Type 2 shoes will therefore protect better than those with a type 1 certification.
When purchasing riding shoes, you should take into account the overall lightness and range of motion, which can offer a higher level of overall safety than only protection and resistance to bumps and cuts. This is in addition to the label.
The explanation is straightforward but important: the flexibility of motion and precise control of the bike's controls under certain circumstances reduce the likelihood of accidents or dangerous situations. This is precisely what we mean when talking about active safety: the capacity of protection to reduce the likelihood of an accident.
It's important to consider what you're wearing based on whether you want technical shoes or boots for riding a motorcycle. And don't forget about the protection of your feet and ankles, which are frequently disregarded.
