Accountability is something that I find feels extra personal to so many founders.
Why? Well, in the beginning, everything was personal.
Every client. Every dollar. Every mistake. Every win. You built the business through your own effort, so when someone drops the ball, it doesn't feel like a missed task. It feels like they've let you down.
I've felt that. Over time, though, I learned that most accountability problems aren't people problems. They're clarity problems.
People can't consistently own what hasn't been clearly defined. They can't meet expectations they don't fully understand. And they certainly can't be accountable for outcomes no one is measuring.
That shift changed the way I lead.
▶️ Instead of asking, "Why aren't they taking ownership?" I started asking, "Have I created the environment where ownership is actually possible?"
The best teams I've worked with don't need more pressure.
💬 They need clear expectations, good leadership, and the confidence to make decisions without everything coming back to the founder.
That's when accountability stops feeling personal. It simply becomes part of how the business operates.
