In Specially Processed American Me, three generations of women cope with the reverberating consequences of the Korean war. During our talkback, Jennifer Le and Masato Goda from WomanKind , Jeehae Fischer from Korean American Family Service Center , and artist Jaime Sunwoo will explore themes from the film– immigration, assimilation, intergenerational trauma– to reflect on how war impacts Asian American communities today.

Swipe to learn more about WomanKind and Korean American Family Service Center, both non profit organizations working to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and child abuse.

It investigates SPAM's legacy in the military and its significance across the Asia-Pacific– Korea, the Philippines, Okinawa, Hawaii, and Guam.

This is a bilingual Korean-English event, with interpretation services provided by Jiwon Kim, staff member at Korean American Civic Empowerment .

Enjoy the perfect pairing: savory Spam and sparkling Halmi while watching Specially Processed American Me, Jaime Sunwoo's surreal autobiographical tale that explores Spam as a portal into Asian America and the Korean War.

Halmi is a refreshing sparkling beverage infused with Korean traditional flavors created by Hannah Bae, who like Jaime, is a second generation Korean American New Yorker. Through their common love of food, community, and their Halmuni (Halmi is a nickname for Grandmother!), they've joined forces for this upcoming Korean-English bilingual event at Flushing Town Hall on June 24! Jaime Sunwoo: Thanks Professor Dylan Yeats for inviting me to guest lecture and talk about Specially Processed American Me at NYU today! It was great to chat with students about Spam and AAPI history. Scroll for a photo of a Spam Halloween costume that Dylan made for his brother. It's a vintage can! Very rare to meet another person who's painted a giant can of SPAM.
