Meet Dhara.

Dhara was named after the kind woman who found her in Martintar, Nadi, and chose not to look away.

Dhara—the woman—made sure the young dog was fed, helped her regain her health, and brought her to Animals Fiji for veterinary treatment and desexing.

The original plan was for Dhara—the dog—to return and live as the family business’s yard dog.

But sometimes, caring for an animal means changing the plan.

With the busy nightlife and activity in the area, Dhara was being harassed, and her rescuer became increasingly worried about her safety. Knowing Dhara needed a safer future, she asked whether Animals Fiji could take her in.

When a shelter space finally became available after another dog was adopted, Dhara joined us.

That was 322 days ago.

For 322 days, Dhara has watched other dogs leave for their forever homes while she patiently waits for someone to choose her.

She is safe, cared for and loved by our team—but what she truly needs is a family of her own. A warm place to sleep, daily walks, gentle pats and someone who will love her for the rest of her life.

Cane-cutting season is here—and suspected poisoning cases are again presenting at our Labasa Clinic.

During Fiji’s sugarcane harvesting season, dogs may have greater access to farms, cane fields and surrounding areas where pesticides, rodenticides, poisoned bait or other toxic substances may be used or stored.

Diva is one of the animals recently brought to Animals Fiji with signs consistent with suspected poisoning.

Her owners noticed that she had suddenly become seriously unwell and rushed her to our Labasa Clinic. Because they acted quickly, our veterinary team was able to begin emergency treatment without delay.

Diva improved with treatment and has now gone home with her family to complete the rest of her medication. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Diva was fortunate. Many animals affected by poisoning do not survive—even when veterinary treatment is provided. Prevention is far more reliable than treatment.

If you use pesticides, rodenticides or other toxic substances:
Never place poison or poisoned bait where dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife or children could access it.

- Follow all product instructions carefully.

- Store chemicals and bait securely.

- Do not leave toxic substances exposed in fields, roadsides, drains or shared community areas.

- Remove and dispose of unused bait, dead rodents and chemical containers safely.

- Warn nearby households when potentially dangerous substances are being used.

Pet owners:
- Keep dogs safely within your property and prevent them from wandering into farms or cane fields.

- Supervise animals when they are outside.

- Be alert for exposed bait, dead rodents or unidentified food that your pets could access.

Possible signs of poisoning include sudden vomiting, excessive drooling, weakness, trembling, seizures, difficulty breathing, unusual bleeding or collapse.

If you believe an animal may have ingested poison, contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen, and do not give home remedies unless instructed by a veterinary professional.

Diva’s owners acted quickly, giving her the best possible chance of survival. Sadly, not every animal reaches veterinary care in time—and many cannot be saved.

This cane-cutting season, please help prevent the next poisoning. Use toxic substances responsibly, keep them completely out of animals’ reach, and act immediately if exposure is suspected.
