Nakau Programme

The Babatana Rainforest Conservation Project just got even bigger as Sikatuku Tribe joined the initiative, with plans to form a legal protected area across 571 hectares of tropical rainforest.

A big congratulations to Sakatuku for standing for conservation. And thanks to New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for their ongoing support of the Babatana project. The forests of Choiseul are pretty amazing and worth protecting. 🌳🌳🌟

World Environment Day 2026 is a global call for climate action.

Nakau and Live and Learn often work in partnership, collaborating with Indigenous landowners across the Pacific on nature-based solutions that support positive climate outcomes.

In Solomon Islands, the Carbon Financed Forest Conservation Project looks at locally owned conservation carbon projects that use the Nakau approach. While Live & Learn lead on Climate Resilient Islands projects, designed around the needs, priorities and knowledge of individual communities.

Both are supported by New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade which works closely with remote communities, local partners and government to support projects that benefit both people and nature.

With lots of milestones reached lately, we also want to acknowledge those communities quietly working away in the background, preparing their forests for protected area status.

Like Sobehatunga Conservation Area in Viru Harbour, Western Province. While they are waiting for official Protected Area declaration, the custodians of this forest have been working with NRDF: learning more about ranger work, sharing of carbon benefits, alternative income opportunities—all working together to prepare their project.
