New members at Paper Bee! Today “Paper Bee profiles” continues with:

Annukka Mäkijärvi

I am an illustrator and graphic designer, and the newest member of Paper Bee. I have been living in Helsinki almost 10 years now, but originally I’m from North Karelia. In my work I especially enjoy visual storytelling, drawing funny characters and animals, and adding not-so-relevant details in those drawings.

I have been working as a full-time freelancer after studying Graphic Design in Aalto ARTS, where I started in 2012. Before that I also studied Art Education and Comics Expression (minor subject) in the same school. I’m planning to continue as a freelancer, since I love the diversity in my projects and being able to come and go as I wish.

As an illustrator my style is very versatile. In other words, I have multiple styles to work with. Creating humorous and cartoonish pictures is as natural as drawing a detailed and more realistic piece. To make it easier for potential clients, I might divide my illustration styles to one or two alter egos in the near future. I will keep you updated if this happens! Next I would like to do (children’s?)book illustrations and package illustrations.

With graphic design related works I can easily embrace my variety of styles, try new techniques, and be more responsible of the whole visual appearance. It also keeps things more interesting for me if I’m not always drawing. As a designer I especially love books, and I would be happy to do more book covers and layouts.

Wherever I go, I usually have Leika the Smooth Collie with me. She can be often seen behind the Paper Bee window, staring intensively everyone passing by.
