YMI Founder's Day 2024
Every year on 8 December, we come together to celebrate Founder’s Day, honouring the birth of our first International President, Judge Paul William Alexander, in 1888. This is a moment to reflect on the profound legacy of our organisation and the enduring values that have guided us for over a century.
In 1922, a group of visionary individuals came together to form what we now know as YMI. Their dream was to unite people across the world through service, fellowship, and a commitment to improving lives. Judge Alexander’s ideals remain as relevant today as they were in the early days of our movement. In his own words:
“To be a Y’s Man has never been predicated upon what a man believes, but upon what he does… The virtue of unselfish service which we insist shall be the hallmark of the Y’s Man is an exemplification of love for one’s fellow man.”
— Paul William Alexander, 1951
This statement captures the heart and soul of YMI. For 102 years, we have embraced this mission, demonstrating unselfish service as the cornerstone of our identity. Our legacy is one of action—bringing hope, uplifting communities, and working tirelessly to make the world a better place.
My theme, “Arise and Shine,” and our collective slogan, “Together for a Better World,” are deeply rooted in this legacy. They remind us of our responsibility to rise to the challenges of today’s world and shine through our actions of compassion and service.
Through our partnership with the YMCA and communities, we continue to empower young people, foster sustainable development, and address the pressing needs of our communities. From small acts of kindness to large-scale initiatives, we have proven that when we come together, we can achieve remarkable things.
Founder’s Day is not just a celebration; it is a recommitment to our shared purpose. As we honour Judge Alexander and our early leaders, let us draw inspiration from their timeless values and unwavering dedication. Let us embrace innovation, build stronger collaborations, and explore new avenues to meet the challenges of our time.
As we look forward, remember that our strength lies in our unity, and our impact is amplified by our collective efforts. Together, we can continue to sow the seeds of hope, love, and compassion, nurturing a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Happy Founder’s Day!
ARISE AND SHINE! TOGETHER FOR A BETTER WORLD!
Warm regards,
A. Shanavas Khan
International President 2024/25

Kiki Fehling was 29 and finishing her doctorate in clinical psychology when she had a heart attack. Doctor's discovered a hole in her heart that had been there since birth. The blockage that caused her heart attack likely stemmed from a blood clot in her calf breaking off, then traveling up to her heart and going through the hole.
Doctors closed the hole and prescribed her a blood thinner to help prevent future clots. She went home after a week. Her emotional recovery was more difficult.
In the months after her heart attack, Kiki was scared of exerting herself. Merely rolling out of bed each morning made her heart race. She couldn't walk to the grocery store without feeling it would cause another heart attack.
Then there was the depression caused by the grief over losing the sense of being a young, healthy person. At times she felt an overwhelming sense of loss of self, safety and control. It led to loneliness, too. "That's the part that lasted the longest for me," she said.
Kiki's friend Agusta Patton underestimated just how traumatizing her friend's heart attack was. "Kiki is so strong and capable, and she didn't have any external injuries or limitations. That's my biggest learning, a reminder that people all have these things happening inside of them and even if they are not always talking about them, they matter so much."
As a clinical psychologist, Kiki specializes in dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, a treatment that combines mindfulness and behavioral strategies to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships and reduce harmful behaviors. She is grateful she knew about DBT at the time of her heart attack. Her familiarity with dozens of coping skills, such as paced breathing, helped her get through it all.
"Even if you're dealing with emotional stuff, there's concrete tools that can help you, and you can get back to normal life," she said.
