What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down on a Spanish Road 🚗
Get out of the road

Never stay inside your vehicle or stand on the hard shoulder if you can avoid it.

Exit via the door away from traffic and move immediately behind a guardrail, up an embankment, or to any safer off-road location.

Be visible before you step out

Put on your reflective safety vest (chaleco) before leaving the vehicle so drivers can see you.

Use the V16 emergency light first; triangles are secondary

The connected V16 emergency light is now the primary signaling device in Spain: activate and place it on your car’s roof without exposing yourself to traffic. It marks your position and can alert traffic authorities.

Emergency triangles may be used in addition to the V16 for extra visibility, but they are not a replacement.

Wait for professional help

Once you are in a safe spot, call your insurer, roadside assistance, or emergency services.

Do not attempt repairs or return to the road if you are exposed to moving traffic.

Even highly visible, marked vehicles can be struck and severely damaged while stopped on the shoulder — the same risk applies to any passenger car and its occupants.
