I recently saw a social media post that said, “Set intentions, not resolutions”. As someone who tends not to set New Year´s Resolutions, this post caught my eye and I thought, now there´s a consideration. Did you know that just 9% of people keep their resolutions all year long. 23% quit in the first week! I appreciate it is all down to the individual, but with stats like this, it doesn’t fill me with confidence that setting resolutions is a game-changing path to success.

I then decided to Google the difference between Resolution and Intention and I was even less encouraged and more disappointed. Intentions are acts of thinking, whereas resolutions are acts of committing. So, it would turn out that instead of putting a label on it and committing, then failing to stick with it, we could just THINK about it, and do nothing at all! What´s the point???
Instead, I have decided to continue with my own method of focusing on discipline, consistency, and accountability, to take ACTION in the areas I want to see improvement. With no-one there to keep you accountable, it can be very easy to slip into LACK of action and you may become another statistic joining the other Resolution failures.
But this is where your WHY comes into play! What is your Why? Why do you want to make a difference or improvement in a particular area? If your why is strong enough, your discipline and consistency will keep you motivated and on track to not let things slip. If the why is weak, you may as well just set an intention, and potentially do nothing at all.

The same goes for personal finances… For how many years have you “intended” to set time aside to put a financial plan together to meet a future financial goal, purchase or even retirement? Or perhaps reviewing your investments´ tax-efficiency and performance?
