The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) is a worldwide independent organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. IAHR stimulates and promotes both research and its application, and by
doing so contributes to sustainable development, a holistic approach to water resources management, the protection of the environment, and a better water future for all.

🌍On World Environment Day 2026, the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) highlights the joint publication of the Policy Brief Ecohydrology and Ecohydraulics: Synergy for the Acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), developed in collaboration with UNESCO’s Ecohydrology Programme💧

Presented at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 1 June, the Policy Brief explores how stronger collaboration between ecological, hydrological and engineering sciences can help address some of today's most pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and increasing pressure on freshwater resources.

The publication emphasises the importance of integrating Ecohydrology and Ecohydraulics, advancing Nature-Based Solutions, and harnessing emerging technologies to support more resilient and sustainable water management.

Developed by an international team of experts from UNESCO, IAHR, academia, industry and the wider water community, the Policy Brief offers recommendations to help accelerate progress towards the SDGs and strengthen ecosystem resilience worldwide.

We are grateful to all authors and contributors involved in this collaborative effort, including Giuseppe Arduino, Elfithri Rahmah, Angelos Findikakis, Peter Goodwin, Michele Mossa, Maciej Zalewski, Katarzyna Izydorczyk, Edyta Kiedrzyńska, Michael McClain, Tom Soo and Estíbaliz Serrano.

🌊 Countdown to the 9th IAHR Europe Congress! 💧

We are thrilled to share an exclusive interview with Dr. @‌Anders Andersson, Congress Co-Chair! https://lnkd.in/e8Yqh6sU

In conversation with Ana Margarida Bento (Editor of Newsflash Europe), Dr. Andersson dives deep into the evolving world of Ecohydraulics. As Europe accelerates its green energy transition, Dr. Andersson explains how hydropower must evolve to balance renewable energy flexibility with ecological sustainability.

🔍Key Highlights:

➜ Vision for 2026: Creating a forum where scientists, engineers, and policymakers join forces to shape the future of hydraulic research.
➜ Technical Shifts: The transformation from 2D to 3D modeling and the exciting potential of "Digital Twins" for our river systems.
➜ Sustainability: Using field measurements and numerical simulations to improve fish migration and river health.
➜ Next Gen: A dedicated focus on empowering early-career researchers at the Luleå congress.

"Together, we can advance knowledge and solutions for the sustainable use of water... that support both people and nature."
