We would like to remember all the soldiers of WWI. 99 years ago the armistice ends the war that annihilated a whole generation in the trenches. Poppies to the fallen.
Hoy hace noventa y nueve años que se firmó el armisticio que finalizó con la Primera Guerra Mundial. Quisiéramos recordar a los soldados y a la generación perdida en las trincheras.

98 years ago the allied forces and the German Empire signed an armistice that ended the Great War. We would like to pay homage all the men that died during those 4 years. Poppies to the fallen.
Hoy hace 98 se firmó el armisticio que acabó con la Primera Guerra Mundial. Quisiéramos rendir homenaje a todos los hombres que fallecieron durante el conflicto. La amapola se ha convertido en el símbolo de este homenaje en Reino Unido y toda la Common Wealth.

USS Olympia (C-6) and USS Becuna (SS-319).
The USS Olympia, a protected cruiser of the 1898 Spanish-American war flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay, is the only surviving American naval warship from its era. The Olympia served in World War I and, in 1921, the ship carried the remains of World War I's Unknown Soldier from France to Washington, D.C., where his body was interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
My heart was was split in two, on the one hand I was in an historic ship - a real dream come true for an History lover - but on the other I was aware that Spain start losing the Philippines in the battle led by this ship.
USS Becuna a Balao-class submarine service earned four battle stars in World War II.Her war operations extended from August 1944 to July 1945. During this period she completed five war patrols in the Philippines, South China Sea, and the Java Sea. Becuna is credited with having sunk two Japanese tankers totaling 3,888 tons.
You must realize that, by this date late in the war, the japanese merchant fleet has already almost been obliterated by the US submarine fleet.
It was a great experience to be in conning tower of the Becuna, with the red combat lights turned on.

USS Olympia crucero protegido de la Guerra Hispano-Americana de 1898 y barco insignia del Comodoro George Dewey en la Batalla de la bahía de Manila, es la única unidad militar americana superviviente de esa era. El Olympia sirvió durante la 1GM y, en 1921, trajo los restos del soldado desconocido americano de la 1GM desde Francia hasta Washington, D.C., dando sepultura al cuerpo en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington.
Mi corazón estaba dividido, por un lado me encontraba en un barco histórico - un sueño hecho realidad para un apasionado de la Historia - pero por otro sabía que España empezó a perder las Filipinas en una batalla dirigida desde este barco.
USS Becuna un submarino clase Balao que ganó cuatro estrellas de combate en la 2GM. Realizó operaciones de combate de Agosto 1944 a Julio de 1945. Llevó a cabo 5 patrulaas de guerra en las Filipina, Mar del Sur de China y el Mar de Java. El Becuna tiene adjudicados los hundimientos de dos cisternas japoneses con un total de 3.880 toneladas.
hay que tener en cuenta que, en esa fecha tan avanzada de la guerra, la flota mercante japonesa había sido prácticamente destruida por le flota submarina norteamericana.
Fue una gran experiencia estar en la torre de control del Becuna, con las luces rojas de combate activadas.

National Museum of the Marine Corps. Located in Triangle, Virginia near Marine Corps Base Quantico. Great museum conveying the history of the Corps. Two pictures are from the WW2 and Vietnam galleries (the m 50 "Ontos" belongs to the latter) and the two others from the Leatherneck Gallery: Marines exiting in 1965 from a Sikorsky UH-34D helicopter and a LVT-1 amphibious tractor at Tarawa. Leatherneck is a nickname for the Marines, from a leather stock once worn around the neck by US Marines which kept the posture erect.
Museo Nacional del Cuerpo de Marines. Triangle, Virginia cerca de la Base del Cuerpo de Marines de Quantico. Excelente museo que transmite la historia del Cuerpo. Dos de las fotos son de las galerias de la 2GM y Vietnam (el M 50 "Ontos" pertenece a esta última) y las otras dos son de la galeria Leatherneck: Marines saliendo en 1965 de un helicóptero Sikorsky UH-34D y un tractor anfibio LVT-1 enTarawa. Leatherneck es un apodo para designar a los Marines, de la pieza de cuero que antaño se ponían alrededor del cuello los Marines de los Estados Unidos para mantener la postura erguida.
