Congratulations to New ICFO PhD Graduate!

We congratulate Dr. Anubhav Srivastava who defended his thesis this morning in ICFO’s Elements Room.

Dr. Srivastava obtained his MSc in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, before joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA professor Dr. Maciej Lewenstein. His thesis titled "Quantum simulations of spin systems for optimal quantum metrology" was supervised by ICREA Prof. Dr. Maciej Lewenstein and Dr. Marcin Płodzień, PhD.

🏆 Un projecte de l'ICFO, entre els resultats destacats de la recerca finançada per La Marató 2020

La Fundació La Marató de 3Cat ha celebrat el seu 27è acte de retorn social, presentant els resultats dels 36 projectes de recerca finançats a l'edició del 2020 dedicada a la COVID-19, que va recaptar la xifra rècord de 13.864.073 € gràcies a la solidaritat de la societat catalana.

Entre els projectes finançats hi ha el coliderat pel Prof. ICREA a l'ICFO Turgut Durduran i el Dr. Jaume Mesquida, metge intensivista i investigador del Parc Taulí Hospital Universitari. El projecte ha investigat l’anomenada debilitat adquirida a les cures intensives, una síndrome de debilitat muscular que afecta els pacients que passen llargs períodes de temps ingressats a les cures intensives. Mitjançant tecnologies òptiques no invasives, els investigadors han analitzat paràmetres d’interès relacionats amb la funció microvascular, per ajudar a entendre millor la patologia i personalitzar el tractament fisioterapèutic.

A més, els bons resultats obtinguts durant el projecte i en d’altres estudis, l’equip ha decidit estendre la recerca a més protocols i assajos clínics.

L'acte va reunir els 98 equips de recerca finançats en aquella edició, juntament amb representants de la comunitat científica, la societat civil i 3Cat, per compartir i celebrar l'impacte de la ciència feta possible gràcies a l'esforç col·lectiu.

📝 Graphene plasmon cavities enable advanced and scalable terahertz photodetectors

ICFO researchers, Dr. Domenico De Fazio, Dr. Sebastián Castilla Gómez, Dr. Karuppasamy Pandian Soundarapandian, Dr. Simone Marconi, Riccardo Bertini, Dr. Roshan Krishna Kumar, led by ICREA Prof. Frank Koppens, have developed a novel platform based on monolayer graphene that produces an efficient electrical response when exposed to terahertz light. Terahertz photodetection is enhanced by using a cavity with acoustic graphene plasmons, a set-up that overcomes a major manufacturing bottleneck while boosting device performance.

These results, published in ACS Photonics, pave the way for practical, high-sensitivity THz photodetectors with potential applications in fields like biomedicine and telecommunications.

Congratulations to new ICFO PhD graduate!

We congratulate Dr. Kartika N. Nimje who defended her thesis yesterday in ICFO’s Auditorium.

Dr. Nimje obtained her MSc in Physics from the Integrated Science Education and Research Centre in India; and she joined the Thermal Photonics team led by Prof. Dr. Georgia Theano Papadakis. Her thesis titled “Photonic Strategies for Approaching Fundamental Limits in Thermophotovoltaic Energy Conversion” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Georgia Papadakis.
