I hope you had a great Fourth of July!
We enjoyed classic American cookout fare—thanks to Pam & Doug for hosting! I opened a Frenchie Winery Napa Valley red blend to pair with the burgers. 🍔 that pairing worked nicely - thanks Steve Nasiatka for the tip.
When it came time for a toast, I reached for the 2021 Raventós i Blanc Blanc de Blancs. Since visiting Spain earlier this year, I find myself reaching for Spanish wines more often—and their sparkling wines tend to be a reliable choice.
Raventós i Blanc is one of Spain’s highly-regarded producers, crafting elegant traditional-method sparkling wines from estate-grown fruit. This one was crisp, clean, and fruit-forward, making it a perfect way to celebrate with family. We featured this bottle, suggested by Bermans Wine and Spirits, as part of a “green wine” tasting earlier this year, based on their commitment to sustainability.
Good food, wine and company for our Fourth, even though the weather was a bit challenging.

Four American Wines - and Wineries - for the Fourth! Picking up on a theme I saw someone else share, highlight four American wines / wineries enjoy, worthy of the holiday. They give a little taste of the abundant variety of wines we have here, from coast to coast, and everywhere in between!
1) Dineen Vineyards - A family-owned winery in Washington’s Yakima Valley. I like pretty much all their wines, but featuring their White Rhone blend...because it’s very good, and this hot weather definitely favors the whites!
2) Westport Rivers Sparkling Wine - yes, my home state of Massachusetts features some good wine! This one has been served at the White House in the past, and is a great option for toasting America’s birthday.
3) Dry Creek Vineyards Mariner - we’ll be doing a Cooking Chat virtual visit to Dry Creek soon, so I wanted to highlight one of their bottles. Many good choices, but I love this red blend.
4) Calais Winery - I was impressed with the overall quality of the wineries I visited and sampled while in Texas Hill Country last year. Calais takes it to another level; their wines can compare favorably with Bordeaux and similar prestigious regions. Pretty much any of their reds and some BBQ would be a next-level 4th of July weekend pairing!

Do you have grilling plans for the 4th of July holiday weekend?
I definitely plan to make this grilled swordfish at some point! A simple marinade makes for moist and flavorful fish. Grilling is by far the best way to prepare swordfish, in my experience.
