This is the integration and testing of the multispectral camera for the RITA project conducted in the NanoSat Lab. The purpose of the project is to design and manufacture a payload to be integrated into a 3-unit cubesat for the 2nd Grand Student Challenge, organized by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS)
One of the experiments in this payload is a multispectral camera able to sense images in multiple bands from red (~600nm) to Near Infrared (~900nm). These images will be used for several scientific purposes: measure vegetation indices over land, detect algae blooms or oil spills over oceans.
During these days, the work of our engineers here is to communicate with the camera and test the optical lenses, that are fixed using an aluminum structure designed by our mechanical engineer. For the moment, a 3D printed model is being used to check the proper fitting of everything.
Note that the size of the whole structure in the picture must fit within a "unit" of a cubesat, i. e. a box of 10 cm edge, and weight must be less than a kilogram (remember that every kilogram sent to space cost A LOT of money). So the challenge is to fit as much as possible in the minimum space possible, keeping a high-quality performance.
