At the end of July West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) completed one of its final end-user validation exercises of Unblur's incident command software as a part of a six-month proof of concept.

This multi-pump exercise was held at Canley Fire Station and aimed to expose firefighters and incident commanders to IRIS Core and Tactics and enhanced situational awareness, information sharing and its digital real-time command support capabilities. The exercise scenario was set around a complex incident involving multiple vehicles and casualties, including a lorry transporting chemicals and a damaged high-voltage power line.

The exercise was successfully completed and enabled end users to use IRIS tactics to gather and share initial risk critical hazards and casualty location and status in real time.

As the exercise escalated, IRIS Core was used to deliver command support and provide onsite and remote briefing, video streaming and GPS tracking of assets and personnel.

This event was one of the final proof of concept validation exercises alongside IRIS Core and Tactics being deployed operationally within the Coventry Command area.

After successfully integrating, deploying and supporting the WMFS ICT team in implementing the solution within WMFS, it is hoped IRIS Core will be rolled out service-wide to WMFS’s 38 fire stations and 1,164 firefighters in September 2023.

At Unblur, our Agile approach to product development has transformed the way in which our teams create and deliver exceptional products such as IRIS Core and IRIS Tactics for emergency incident management.

It is a process that is endemic in our culture and is fundamental to a market approach in which our relationship with end users is as partners rather than customers. We put our partners at the heart of every decision by involving them throughout the development process and embedding ourselves with them to gain a detailed understanding of their needs.

We create an iterative process that breaks down complex projects into manageable tasks that allow us to deliver incremental value and improvement at rapid pace. Throughout the journey we work with together with partners in a loop of continuous communication, feedback and knowledge sharing.

Our Agile approach has driven the rapid early success for Unblur in the UK fire and rescue service and we are proud to be working with several services, including London, West Midlands, Hereford & Worcester and the Fire Service College.
