Desert Rose is no more. The upstairs area has been improved, and the signage now reads "Progressive People Network".

Past customers are invited to their neighbours, Habou Garden restaurant and bar where they will find the usual assortment of hot and cold beverages, good food, and decent washrooms.

Desert Rose is a small cafeteria just 100 metres south-west of Medinet Habu temple in Luxor, Egypt. That distance is sufficient to keep it clear of the diesel fumes from the parked coaches, as well as the pushy merchants touting postcards, maps, books, scarves, etc. The garden at the front is small, seating maybe 20, but has step-free access from the road for those of us less mobile. Two small steps lead into the cool interior, again seating 20 or so and including clean bathrooms and a small bar/kitchen area.

Shallow stairs with a good handrail lead up to the roof terrace, where the views over Medinet Habu and the surrounding area are spectacular, especially towards sunset.

Freshly-squeezed juices (fruit is bought to order from the shop next door) are the speciality. Also coffee, tea and other infusions, and a range of soft drinks from the fridge.

A sign that this place is good is that many drivers stop by for a drink and sheesha while waiting for their guests to finish their tour of the temple. They have a clear view of the full length of the coach-park.

There is good Wi-Fi, and a number of 220 volt power outlets for those needing to keep in touch or just to recharge.

Being at the junction of the paved road and the tracks into the desert, it is a popular stopping point for camels, horses and donkeys.
