Said by Sir Stephen Hawking who died at the age 76 during the early hours of Wednesday morning March 14.
Born 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. He was blessed by a family that encouraged learning, who always pushed him to quench his intrigue and curiosity. Very early in his life he decided to delve into the realm of science, which had earned him a place at Oxford University to read natural science in 1959, before studying for his PhD at Cambridge. By 1963, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live. This diagnosis had detrimental effects on his marriage and social relationships which left him with little to look forward to except for a world that would never be the same to him. The main consequence of this disease, was being trapped in his own body and never being able to regain control over his own life, leaving him with nothing more than spasms and thoughts that could never be shared. A frightening new reality that would leave anyone in low spirits. People once feared loosing him before he could do anything in his field, but that did not stop him for overcoming the impossible. Through determination and will power he set out to do the one thing he does best and that was being a scientist, this was no easy feat but it did earn him the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge - a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton in 1979. Published his book A Brief History of Time in 1988, which has sold more than 10 million copies. In the late 1990s, he was reportedly offered a knighthood, but 10 years later revealed he had turned it down over issues with the government's funding for science. One of his greatest contributions was his study of the nature of black holes, in his theory he suggested that black holes emit radiation and dissappear after a duration of time which was later named "Hawking radiation" a theory which he had outlined in 1974.
Here at PCG we are not fully fledged scientists but we are disciples of the same creed, where we also try to add something more to our field that doesn't already exist. We cannot compare our collective efforts against that of one great man, but we intend on learning from his own struggles and accomplishments. Our very business is built upon challenges and difficulties, if we could be anything remotely close to Sir Stephen Hawking, then that would be enough.
