ntensive 4-5 day workshops take place in Aswan, Upper Egypt, under the theme: “Linking Heritage to Contemporary”. The main focus of the workshops is finding inspiration, recognizing it, understanding it and then knowing what to do with it. They’re not about copying from the old as much as they are about recreating their creative processes in order to understand the process itself instead of only the outcome or end product. The workshops are about understanding yourself and communicating your inner feelings and visions. With an abundance of individual guidance for the participants and a lot of after-hour one-on-one’s late into the night, they learn to speak a contemporary design language using their individual voice. But, the participation doesn’t stop after these 5 intensive days in Aswan. The participants leave Aswan with a concept and design-plan and over a series of three months following the workshop, with assistance from the designer and from the talented craftsmen in Khan al-Khalili, participants then learn and conduct the jewelry making process, eventually performing finishing techniques in the Azza Fahmy jewellery factory. Ultimately each participant will create an exhibition plan for each finalized piece of jewellery to be shown in Azza Fahmy jewellery galleries with the end goal of the young artists having the opportunity to promote and sell their work. The project sponsors seven students from Egypt and two students from European schools per each workshop. Six Egyptian or non-Egyptian designers/students have the opportunity to attend a Nubre workshop for a course fee.
