New Gourna village(1948)
Location: luxor ,west bank of the nile river
Type : residential
- [ ] Goal: integrate traditional Egyptian style and materials with modern Architectural principleshe worked to include and empower the poor through participation in design and building processes
- [ ] It was the replacement for the old gourna city which the government decided to relocate as it was on a mountain near ancient egyptian tombs in valley of the kings in order to perserve it and facilitate tourism development
- [ ] He relied on natural methods for ventilation so He used thick walls so that uv sun rays are not allowed easily into the house
- [ ] He was inspired by nubian architecture after visiting it at 1941 so he started using domes and their decorations patterns
- [ ] He designed the houses with inner courts as a way to cool the house ascold air could escape and settle in as cold air is denser than warm air and also to obtain privacy and calmness
- [ ] He designed all the rooms with good insulation and ventilation and made a healthy and clean environment using domes and high ceilings
- [ ] New Gournaβs architecture consisted mostly of modest mud brick structures, chosen for their simplicity and affordability. In addition, they could be constructed with local materials, without having to rely on international resources.
- [ ] The villageβs focal point was a large central square, around which were placed important community buildings, such as the mosque and village hall.
- [ ] Grid-inspired yet meandering streets and narrow alleys led to the many residential quarters.
- [ ] New Gourna is now celebrated for its design by architects and cultural heritage professionals alike rejecting European ideas of modernism
- [ ] Flood water damaged parts from the project so it stopped after finishing fifth of the houses that was supposed to be built
- [ ] In 2010, UNESCO launches safeguarding project at New Gourna Village, part of Ancient Thebes World Heritage site
