A New Success Story: A Model of Effective Integration Between Scientific Research and Practical Application for Sustainable Development
Dr. Mohamed Ramadan Zezoq represents an inspiring model of an ambitious Arab researcher who uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to monitor marine oil pollution and protect the coastal environment.
Through his participation in international projects such as NAFCOAST and GMES & Africa, he contributed to developing advanced systems for coastal protection and environmental sustainability.
Both the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) and the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) played a significant role in accelerating the completion of his PhD and supporting the development of an integrated system to protect marine environments from oil pollution, exemplifying the power of collaboration between scientific research and practical application for sustainable development.
The project's work is crucial for providing data to decision-makers to help them respond to and mitigate the impact of oil spills on coastal areas. The data and maps they produce are important in Egypt, with its busy coastal waters, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

On April 15, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt, CEDARE and DRC organized a Stakeholder Workshop for the Marcnowa - GMES&Africa projects. This gathering brought together a diverse group of visionaries, including representatives from Libya's Remote Sensing Center, various Egyptian Ministries (Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture), leading research institutions, universities, and dynamic private sector entities.
🔍 This workshop underscores the transformative power of Earth Observation data in enhancing decision-making and policy formulation for sustainable water, natural resource, and coastal management across North & West Africa..
