AKU AKU is a design studio based in Tallinn, Estonia. We develop strategies, create concepts and implement solutions across different media.

In the latest edition of Courier Magazine, was featured as a great city for innovation and entrepreneurship. AKU was happy to contribute some insights about our work and Estonian .

This is the new visual identity for the National Library of Estonia. The organisation is going through a major change from a traditional library to a modern, customer-centric service provider. The identity needed to reflect that shift and provide an open-ended system than still ensures consistensy across touchpoints. During the process we proposed a new abbreviation and domain name that became the wordmark. RaRa Sans, a custom headline font was developed together with Anton Koovit, based on his UCity typeface. It was stripped back to bare basics before some friendly features were added. The overall look remains rather neutral for various use-cases and content types. A vibrant colour palette helps to convey the open nature of the renewed library. We built the solution for users of different skill levels, focusing on practical tools and templates rather than rigid rules.
