In the framework of the "Soundfields" between 2023-2024 we had 3x 3 day long free creative spatial audio workshops in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. We want to express our gratitude to all our partners, educators and students who dedicated their time and energy to help it all happen and Nordplus Horizontal for support. Workshops was part of "Soundfields" a free education project presenting 3x3 day workshops in Baltics to provide the wider public with access to specialized knowledge, skills and tools to learn about spatial audio. Participants from different backgrounds with or without any prior knowledge had the opportunity to meet and learn basic skills, tools and knowledge necessary to understand the field of spatial audio from the chosen experts in the field about particular topics. Project is supported by Nordplus Horizontal - a cross-sectoral programme supporting innovative projects across traditional categories and sectors, as well as projects that address new, broad and complex challenges. Participation in the programme is open for all institutions and organizations willing to cooperate to develop education within a lifelong learning perspective.

In the framework of the "Soundfields" project so far we had 2 creative spatial audio workshops in Estonia and Lithuania with educators from Tallinn and Vilnius bringing together beginners and professionals in the field. Final workshop "Soundscapes" will happen in Latvia on October 1-3 led by Gustavs Lociks in cooperation with UPDATE festival in Liepāja.

In the workshop, participants will use various visual materials (images, photos, GIFs, videos – either self-made or found) that, with the help of ambisonics technology and Reaper DAW, will be transformed into sound sketches/ sound compositions or soundscapes that complement the visual material. Participants will have the opportunity to record their own sounds or use free sound libraries such as freesound.org.
The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those looking to expand their knowledge in the audio field. No prior experience with ambisonics or extensive DAW knowledge is required, but basic computer skills and an interest in sound are essential.

Overview:
This workshop will introduce several techniques and methods of spatialization and work with audio effects using the 3-dimensional higher order ambisonics environment. All topics will be explained, demonstrated and later the participants have the opportunity to practice individually using the ARS ambisonic studio's 23-loudspeaker's array with their own laptops or with the local computer.
The workshop will include enhanced methods of spatial design, the work with multichannel and ambisonic effect plugins, room and distance emulation, reverb, and directivity shaping. Additionally an ambisonic mastering workflow and techniques of ambisonic sound field manipulation (upmix, warp, widening, directional loudness, beamforming) will be shown. Specialized Reaper templates will be provided for the participants.
Key Learnings:
By the workshop's conclusion, you will be able to:
- design a spatial sound field with extended 3D panning and automation methods
- apply properly mono/stereo, multichannel and ambisonic audio effect plugins in an ambisonic Reaper session
- design sounds in a virtual ambisonic room, manage sound distances and directivity
- manipulate the ambisonic sound field with several methods: technically, spatial and loudness-related
- apply the sound effects in the ambisonic mastering workflow
