HOW WE DID IT ↓

We connected our website directly to Colorado’s real-time highway weather stations — the same sensors CDOT uses for road conditions.
No plugins. No iframes. Just live data.

Here’s the blueprint:

1️⃣ Pulled live weather data
We used the official COtrip API to request temperature, visibility, and precipitation from nearby stations.

2️⃣ Found the closest station that actually reports temperature
Not every sensor gives full weather info, so the code automatically picks the nearest valid one.

3️⃣ Converted the reading to °F
Weather stations report in Celsius — we translate it instantly for our team.

4️⃣ Determined day vs. night
Using the station’s coordinates, our code calculates sunrise and sunset, so the icon switches from sun → moon automatically.

5️⃣ Styled it as a compact “bug”
A tiny UI element with a Font Awesome icon + temperature, updated every 10 minutes.

Result?
A clean, reliable weather snapshot inside our dashboard, powered by real highway sensors.
