Did you know breadfruit was introduced to the Caribbean from sailors who brought it from the South Pacific?

What do we love more than a good plant mystery? Solving it! We're excited to share that our Breadfruit Institute, National Tropical Botanical Garden helped solve a 230-year-old one: what were the original Tahitian cultivars of breadfruit that Captain Bligh introduced to the Caribbean, now a major producer and consumer of this important crop?

Through scientific analysis, local knowledge, and historical sources, an international team of researchers were able to link two Caribbean cultivars to their Tahitian counterparts and propose additional matches! The research was informed by our breadfruit collection and Dr. Diane Ragone's (Director Emerita of the Breadfruit Institute) fieldwork in Tahiti and beyond. We're extra excited because the publication of this discovery coincides with the date of breadfruit's introduction to the Caribbean on January 23 in 1793.
