The two wounded Danish journalists, Stefan and Emil, are now back in Denmark after being safely evacuated out of Ukraine.

Last Saturday the Ekstra Bladet reporters were caught in gunfire while covering the conflict near the city of Okhtyrka. We are pleased that this highly complex extraction was a success, and are honoured that Guardian can ensure the safety and security of those who work tirelessly to ensure a free and independent media coverage of the tragic events currently unfolding in Ukraine.

In times where disinformation is increasingly used as a strategy of war, the work of journalists is vital. On 9 January, the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) imposed new sanctions on Mali after the military government failed to propose a sufficient road map towards a return to civilian rule. Last year, the West-African country experienced its second coup d’etat in only two years.

The new sanctions entail a suspension of trade, flights, and a host of financial and commercial activities linked to the country, including the freezing of direly needed foreign aid. Additionally, all ECOWAS ambassadors were recalled to their countries of origin. While Western states have supported the initiative, Russia and China blocked a supportive statement from the UN Security Council, which points to their interest in collaborating with the government. Particularly Russia is alleged to be seeking greater influence in the Sahel country by negotiating security contracts between its infamous private military company Wagner Group and the transitional Malian government.

As a result of the sanctions, Mali is now politically and economically isolated. Protestors have since gathered to demonstrate against the sanctions and further unrest, especially in the capital city of Bamako, must be expected. The sanctions will make Mali even more unstable - on top of the already prevailing security challenges.
