#2 - Good design makes a product useful

The 740 furniture system, one of Rams’ least familiar designs, is based on round stacking elements that were inspired by Japanese sitting mats – even today a captivatingly simple design concept.

Good Design is a collection based on German industrial designer Dieter Rams’ ten commandments on what constitutes “good design”. Almost 50 years later, the 10 principles are as valid today as they were on its inception. This is a celebration of a design philosophy.

#9 - Good design is environmentally-friendly

Vitsœ, funded in 1959 by Niels Vitsœ and along Dieter Rams as it's chief designer, worked to construct a low-energy, modest, expandable building that will adapt continuously in response to the changing needs of its occupiers for many decades. Products that do not strive for built-in obsolescence but prefer to be discreet, adaptable and faithful servants in the face of a turbulent world. Products that minimise their inevitable impact on the world’s environment and resources by being useful for as long as possible. Living better with less that lasts longer. This is our homage to and Dieter Rams.
