On the night of January 23, 2012, 24-year-old Kenyan Anthony Omari woke up to find three men armed with machetes standing at the foot of his bed. It was the fourth time the orphanage he was protecting, the Faraja Children’s Home, had suffered an intrusion. But this time, the assailants had come for revenge.

Omari didn’t hesitate for a second. He grabbed the hammer hidden under his bed — the same one he had used to drive off attackers just a few days earlier — and charged at them, determined to protect the 37 abandoned orphans in his care. Brandishing his tool like a weapon, he fought them with his fists and shouts, managing to push them back until they fled.

Amid the chaos, he heard the children crying behind a door. He ran to reassure them, but in those few seconds, one of the attackers struck him in the face with a machete. Severely wounded and dazed, Omari still managed to close the orphanage door to ensure the children were safe before collapsing, bleeding heavily.

He received 11 stitches and would carry the scar for life. Yet, barely two days later, he was back with the children. His act of courage quickly spread across the Internet after a young Reddit user shared his story and mentioned that the orphanage needed $2,000 to build a protective wall. The result: over $65,000 raised in just 24 hours, funding improved security and solid infrastructure for the children.
