The desired exit was from a malaise that had crept up on me. Five years later the malaise was gone and the Exit Route ID reappeared on an Instagram account I set up to explore photography in reaction to what I read from Francois Laruelle and his concept of non-photography. The Instagram project quickly became an exercise in cultural jamming as it was way more fun and never really understood Laruel
le enough to properly explore his concepts. In 2016, the language school I worked at announced a "structured exit from the English language teaching market in Germany." The consequences of this decision were: 1. my work load fell by 75%, 2. the same for my staff, 3. the company didn't care about market image anymore. There was clear opportunity to use my time. the time of my colleagues and the space in the school to organise a series of events leading up to the closure of the school in December 2016. The series was given the name "Exit Through The Language School" and extended a many of the themes that were on that Twitter list and in my Instagram account: cultural jamming, signal and noise, psycho-geography, devised theatre, the use of space, music, dance, painting and sculpture, friends, and co-operation. There was also a chance to bring techniques from the language classroom into cultural work. Now that the school is one week away from closing it is time to put Exit Route into a wider context of the city and to extend the project to new spaces, and with new people. Berlin 4th December 2016
