Hi dears, after a week living in a boat and learning sailing, I am happy to be able to teach in a normal schedule this week again 🙏 Tomorrow I am teaching with this beautiful view from La Palma that I want to share with you all ❤️ Inspired by this place I have prepared a Deep Relax class (yet not yin). See you and breathe with you tomorrow 🧘‍♀️

Balance is health. In order to maintain a balanced body and a balanced mind, there are combinations that are important to hold on to, like for instance training/rest or action/calmness.

In a more particular example, if you do a lot of pushing, like in Yoga practice, it is important to compensate with pulling exercises to stay physically balanced. Many Yogis end up being quite strong in pushing but are not able to pull up their own body weight, having a strong body in one way but a weak one in another, leading to imbalances and often to injuries.

If you feel identified with this example, pullups are a great exercise that you can combine with your yoga practice. If you are not able to do a single pullup yet, use a rubber band for assistance or start doing inverted rows.

There is no one right type of pullup, it depends on what you want to work on. The typical way is holding a hollow body (round back, shoulders forward), which implies heavy Lattisimus dorsi work and includes support from the ABS and chest muscles.

I tend to like better the (a bit harder) archer version or simply de-engaging the abs and legs, turning in a more back dominant pull, which trains important and often forgotten muscles like the Mid & Low Trapezius, Rhomboids, Rear Deltoids and Erector spinae, which also play a huge role in having a proper posture. I show this version in the first video of this post.

In the second video I show the Frenchie pullup (as @eric_horst @training4climbing named it). Sorry that it does not look too clean here because I recorded it at the end of my training and got pretty tired already :) At the end of this video I also show the Scapular pullup, a great way to train the shoulders for pulling motion.

No matter which pullup type to decide to work on, keep the following points in mind:
1. Full hand grip, do not collapse on fingers.
2. Work with control (shoulders engaged) even when you arrive at the lowest "relaxed" position.
3. Aim for chest to bar, instead of chin to bar.
4. Favor quality over quantity.
5. Keep a positive attitude and have fun :)
