Are you planning to spend Christmas time in Prague?
Christmas in Prague is a magical experience, combining centuries-old traditions with the charm of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Here’s what you can expect during the festive season in Prague:
1. Christmas Markets
Old Town Square Market: The heart of Prague’s celebrations, featuring a giant Christmas tree, stalls selling traditional Czech treats, mulled wine, and handcrafted ornaments.
Wenceslas Square Market: A more modern counterpart with a similar festive vibe.
Other Markets: Check out Náměstí Míru and Prague Castle for smaller, cosier markets.
2. Czech Christmas Traditions
Christmas Eve (December 24th): is the most important day of the holiday season. Known as "Štědrý den" (Generous Day), it is filled with traditions, family gatherings, and festive meals.
Food: Traditional dishes include carp (served fried or in soup) and potato salad. Sweets like vánočka (a braided sweet bread), gingerbread cookies, and other Christmas cookies are popular. Nowadays, carp is replaced by classic cutlets or other fish, but many Czechs still keep the tradition of carp.
Advent Wreaths: Found in homes and churches, with candles lit each Sunday of Advent.
3. Cultural Highlights
Midnight Mass: Held at churches, these services are deeply moving. In the city centre, you can find it in for example in St. Vitus Cathedral and Týn Church,
Concerts: Classical music concerts and Christmas carols are performed in venues such as the Municipal House, Rudolfinum, and churches.
Nutcracker Ballet: A holiday favourite, often performed at the National Theatre.
4. Winter Activities
Ice Skating: Public rinks pop up around the city, for example at Ovocný trh and Letná Park.
Snowy Walks: Wander through snow-dusted Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, or Petřín Hill for stunning winter views.
5. Decorations
Streets and squares are adorned with lights, wreaths, and festive displays.
The Christmas tree in Old Town Square is a highlight.
6. Weather
December is usually cold, and snow is possible, adding to the fairytale atmosphere. Dress warmly!
Prague’s blend of Gothic architecture, cozy markets, and festive traditions makes it a perfect destination for a Christmas getaway. Would you like tips on where to stay or what to try at the markets?
