DIARY OF A SKY records the invisible militarization and violence taking place in the sky above the Lebanese capital Beirut, by tracking noise levels and their sources, as well as their impact on people’s daily lives. The film, using various footage from throughout the year 2020 as well as text and voice overs, documents Beirut’s sky as a backdrop of the political and military tensions taking place above and around the city, including Israeli surveillance planes, the humming of generators, and the Beirut port explosion.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan has over a decade of experience investigating audio and a doctorate from the University of London on the role of sound in legal investigations. In 2023 he founded Earshot, the world’s first not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the study of audio for human rights and environmental advocacy. His work has been presented in the form of forensic reports, lectures and live performances, films, publications, and exhibitions all over the world. In 2019, he was awarded the Turner Prize. His film “Diary of a Sky” (2024) screened at festivals around the world including Visions du Réel, Toronto International Film Festival and CPH:DOX.

Meet the artists of our upcoming exhibition |The Shock Workers of a New Horror
✧ Polina Davydenko is an artist working across photography, video, sound, and research. Her practice examines the environmental, social, and sensory consequences of war, focusing on the ways military violence reshapes landscapes, infrastructures, and everyday life. Returning repeatedly to her native Dobropillia in the Donetsk region, she documents territories marked by the ongoing Russian invasion, tracing the entanglement of ecological degradation, displacement, and survival. For the exhibition at Display, she presents a sound installation in which air-raid sirens are reproduced through the voices of classical singers Darina Konoplya and Anastasia Hart. By translating a technologically generated warning signal into a human voice, the work reveals how the experience of war becomes inscribed directly into bodies and everyday perception.
