Did you know that on May 1, 1974, the “Concentration Camp” in Tarrafal was closed?
50 years ago, due to the revolution, called the “Revolução dos Cravos” that took place in Portugal, to put an end to the dictatorship of the time, led by Salazar.
Salazar’s regime was by nature a totalitarian system, very much similar to Italian Fascism and German Na**sm. The concentration camp in Tarrafal was the solution found by the regime to silence political opponents and people who would fight against their dictatorship.
So they chose Tarrafal, because of its bleak and barren spectrum that would make the prisoners feel hopeless and discouraged.
This place is still engraved in the minds of the Capeverdeans, Guineans, Angolans, and Portuguese as they know the camp as “Campo de Morte Lenta” because they were suffering abuse, torture, and a poor diet.
Book a tour to Tarrafal with us and we will bring you here to learn a bit about the history of this Concentration Camp.

Ash Day 🍲
Here in Cabo Verde, mainly in Santiago, we celebrate ash day. Despite all the religious beliefs and celebrations, it is a traditional celebration where the family and friends get together, to cook lots of food and have fun.
The dishes are the special touch that makes Ash Day, Ash Day. We will be having a dried fish stew, cooked with vegetables and coconut oil, alongside a corn-based typical food called “Xerém”, some fried pastries made with potatoes, dried fish, and eggs, and another dish called “Spernegal”, a dish made with boiled green kale and some magic condiments that makes it delicious.
Ash wednesday is like another christmas day for us, but it will be understood better if experienced.
Be a part of our family this ash wednesday and experience this unique cape verdean tradition.

On January 20th, here in Cabo Verde, we celebrate our National Heroes’ Day. On this day, we honor former fighters and remember the death of Amilcar Cabral.
The commemoration usually starts with a parade where people get together manifesting union and patriotism. Followed by distinct events like Conferences, Film Exhibitions and among other activities.
Also this year is exceptionally special because it is the Centenary Anniversary of Amilcar Cabral, celebrating his 100 birthday on September 12th.
Get to know more about Cabral when visiting Cabo Verde Santiago Island: the Amilcar Cabral Museum in Plateau and his Memorial located in Várzea next to the National Library.
