Chronic Disease Awareness Day recognises the millions of people worldwide living with long term health conditions and raises awareness of their impact on our communities.

From a rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) perspective, this includes autoimmune and autoinflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), lupus and axial spondyloarthritis, among others, which are lifelong conditions that require ongoing multidisciplinary care.

Last week, EULAR was in Brussels for the MEPs for RMD Action event, "Breaking the Silos: Towards a More Integrated EU NCD Policy", hosted by MEP Romana Jerković, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Public Health.

The discussion highlighted why Europe needs a more integrated approach to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and explored the impact of co- and multi-morbidity, the importance of coordinated prevention, and why rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) must be better recognised in EU and national health policies.

A message stood out: RMDs are a major contributor to workforce shortages, reduced competitiveness, and rising disability across Europe, yet they remain under-prioritised in both health and employment policy.

The meeting featured contributions from Prof. Margreet Kloppenburg (EULAR Advocacy Past Chair), Katy Antonopoulou (EULAR PARE), Antonella Cardone (Cancer Patients Europe), and Petronille Bogaert (DG SANTE).
