The 18th-century Ujumbe Palace is one of the most important architectural testimonies of the former Sultanates of the Comoros and a remarkable example of Swahili coastal architecture. Today, the monument faces growing threats linked to structural degradation and climate vulnerability.

Now, restoration work on this historic site in Mutsamudu will begin. This week, in the presence of H.E. Mr. Bajrafil, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Union of the Comoros to UNESCO, and H.E. Mr. Étienne Chapon, Ambassador of France to the Union of the Comoros, a ceremony was held to launch this initiative.

Implemented by Collectif du Patrimoine des Comores, the project will restore this monument using traditional techniques combined with climate-resilient methods. The project supports local skills and craftsmanship and draws on expertise from Zanzibar—an exchange of know-how that reflects ALIPH’s focus on building solidarity, dialogue, and regional cooperation.

ALIPH is proud to be supporting this project alongside other partners, notably the Cooperation and Cultural Action Department of Ambassade de France aux Comores, as well as UNESCO and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.
