I usually have an idea of what I want or need, when it comes to clothes, and will wait months or sometimes years (😬) to find the right piece. I don't want to make impulsive decisions with my money that contribute to the gigantic environmental and social impacts that capitalism and the fashion/textile industry have on our 🌍. I wasn't always like this, but that's a story for another day.
I try to follow my own rules.... No fast fashion ✔. Only secondhand, vintage, or me-made clothing ✔. Support local, female-owned, BIPOC-owned businesses wherever possible ✔.
And yet, of course all of those boxes won't be checked all of the time. This sweater is a perfect example. I have been looking for something like this for months. I wanted it to be a heavy knit. The right length. Pockets and an interesting neckline. The right colour. And then... there she was 😍. Bam. dropped a beautiful collection for spring, and I knew that this was the one. Did it check EVERY SINGLE box? No. Did it check some? Yes.
For those of us with those self-imposed rules: sometimes we need to check ourselves. The most important thing when it comes to our clothes is: "Will I wear the heck out of this piece and love it for a long time?" We need to own pieces that last - and a big part of that is taking care of them properly. Be thoughtful and deliberate with WHAT you buy, and then enjoy the heck out of it. Guilt-free.
