We had a big snow dump on Tuesday, so I did another batch of snow dyeing! It also rained on Wednesday, so pretty unpredictable weather right now. A shout out to friends Ruth and Cindy who’ve also been playing with snow dyeing with great results!

For this batch, I wanted to have some more earthy browns, greys, greens and oranges, and I threw in some red and burgundy as well. I am grateful to for gifting me some new to me dyes and supplies, so lots more colours to play with!

I used all thrifted and gifted fabrics that were well loved/stained/torn, including a cotton sheet, linen tablecloths, and linen tea towel all torn into smaller pieces, and other small linens and pieces of fabric, some trim (lace, ribbon), a doily, some medical gauze and some threads. As usual, all items were presoaked in a soda ash solution, and I placed some of the items under my wire baskets to pick up the excess dye that dripped through.

I’m really happy with all of the pieces! The linen pieces have the sharpest definition. I can see much fun stitching ahead. The second last image shows a piece I used to mop up the excess dye residue on the bins after the snow had melted, and I could have used a cloth twice as large. (Thanks to Ruth from TFAM for mentioning about her “mopping up cloth” that made me think to do this!) There are also some ribbons and lace shown that didn’t pick up much dye, and so they are probably synthetic. I’ll throw them in a Rit dye bath sometime.
