The Quiet Work of Small Communities
Small municipalities carry a unique responsibility.
With limited resources and small teams, they manage essential infrastructure that protects both public health and the environment.
Lagoon systems are a central part of that responsibility.
They operate quietly, often without recognition, supported by operators who understand their systems through experience as much as training.
These are not large, automated facilities. They are practical, hands-on systems, managed carefully over time. And they work. But behind that quiet reliability is ongoing effort.
Monitoring. Adjusting. Responding to changes in weather, loading, and system behaviour.
This work is not always visible, but it is constant.
As expectations around environmental performance continue to evolve, it is worth acknowledging the role these communities and operators play—and considering how best to support them moving forward. www.bgpgroup.ca

What Happens Between Seasons
Lagoon systems do not operate the same way year-round.
In colder climates like Manitoba, performance naturally shifts with the seasons. Biological activity slows in winter and accelerates in warmer months, creating cycles of treatment that depend heavily on temperature and time.
Spring brings thaw and movement. Summer brings peak biological activity. Fall begins the transition again.
These cycles are expected. They are part of how lagoons were designed to function.
But seasonal variability also introduces complexity.
Changes in loading, temperature swings, and accumulated materials can influence how consistently these systems perform from one cycle to the next.
This does not indicate failure.
It highlights the importance of understanding how time, temperature, and biology interact within these systems—and how those interactions may evolve as environmental expectations continue to shift. www.bgpgroup.ca
