Miniwargamer Dave
You dare make fun of our hobby?
I heard our ally Henry was being made fun of for participating in the hobby. So I made this video to serve as both a response to him and as a declaration of how I feel about it.
If a man makes fun of another for participating in our hobby this is my message:
Losers make fun of things they don’t understand. Stop being a child. Grow up. Be a man of honour.
Now for a message to those who experience being made of, teased, ridiculed, or any other manner of unacceptable behavior:
You have allies. The fact that you engage by spending your time, your resources, your creativity, and your very heart and soul and put it all into the hobby means… you are contributing to something far bigger than yourself. The very nature of this means you are part of a collective. The brush you use to paint your minis was made by someone who put thought into its design and function. The minis you paint were sculpted by someone who put a part of themselves into it. The games you play were engineered by a group of people who spent countless hours conceiving, iterating, and play testing the system. The lore you read was imagined by someone who put thought into building worlds and using their storytelling skills to bring it to life. YOU are a part of all this. You participate in all this rich and wonderful community that has an enormous amount of passion and support. You are not alone in it. Your doubts, your fears, your concerns and hardships are understood and validated. So take this knowledge and move forward with a reinvigorated determination to be the BEST version of yourself. You have so much to give and contribute. And your hobby footprint will serve as a beacon of inspiration to many who follow after you.
I love our community more than I can put into words. The thought of others making fun of those who participate in it ignites a protective fire within me that’ll burn any who oppose it. We have enough real life challenges to contend with. If any dare tread on sacred ground that is our hobby space… they’ll be face to face with beautiful wrath.
INSANE Converted ORK Morkanaut / Knight. Absolutely awesome and it just WORKS!
“Why do you like converting models?” I asked my friend Kyle to which he replied “To make it my own.”
I love that sentiment. When we make models our own we are emotionally invested in how they perform on the tabletop. We tend to be more keenly interested in their lore. We feel more pride in the hobby time it took to get it to where it needed to be and we tend to share it more. This is certainly the case with Kyle’s converted Morkanaut. His description of the parts he’s used to build it is wild! I could hear his enthusiasm as he explained the reasons why he chose the parts needed to achieve specific aspects of the build. It was truly magnificent to listen to and it’s one of my favorite things about the hobby.

To all my fellow wargaming dads out there.
Happy Father’s Day!
To my own dad:
You made me into what I am today. Your sacrifices and pain forged me into the best version of myself I could possibly be and every decision you made is worth every ounce of joy I’m privileged to experience with my own kids. Thank you dad for being there, for believing in me, and for showing me there’s no greater calling on this earth. You are the greatest warrior I know. I’m proud to be your son. I love you Dad.
These stills were taken from the feature I made a decade ago called The Rangers: Bloodstone and is available to watch on Prime Video. I had an extraordinary experience filming this fantasy movie with both my daughter and my dad. It’s the story of Drustan Lorne (played by me) a father who tracks down the orcs responsible for capturing his daughter (big mistake!) and also tells the tale of the warrior who trained my character (played by my own dad). It was the experience of a lifetime and I have many fond memories I’ll cherish forever.
To those still reading: give your dad a call, tell him about your day, tell him you’re doing what he taught you and you’re living your best life because of him. If you’re unable to do this… say the words aloud anyway. Wherever he is, he’ll hear you say it.
