Our next topic on the role of Physiotherapy in Healthy Aging will focus on pain.
Pain management is one of the top reasons people seek out physiotherapy. For some individuals, this pain is temporary and caused by a specific injury/event. For others, the pain is much more complex and persists for longer than 3 months.
There is strong evidence that chronic pain is most effectively managed using non-pharmacological strategies, including activity, exercise and mental health supports.
A physiotherapist can provide you with the resources, knowledge and education to self-manage your pain. According to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (2021):
• Physiotherapy reduces reliance on opioids to manage pain.
• Physiotherapy exercise rehabilitation can reduce pain and disability, as well as improve quality of life for patients with musculoskeletal pain.
• Physiotherapy effectively treats and reduces lower back pain, osteoarthritis, and other musculoskeletal pain conditions.
• Timely and appropriate access to physiotherapy can reduce reliance on publicly funded health care services and medications to manage pain.
It is important to recognize the complexity of chronic pain and the need for a multifactorial, interdisciplinary intervention. For more information, check out the CPA’s website at https://physiotherapy.ca/npm-2021-physiotherapy-helps-prevent-manage-pain
